HEALTH BENEFITS OF KIWI FRUIT
If kiwifruits do not yield when you gently apply pressure with your thumb and forefinger, they are not yet ready to be consumed since they will not have reached the peak of their sweetness. Kiwifruits can be left to ripen for a few days to a week at room temperature, away from exposure to sunlight or heat.
Placing the fruits in a paper bag with an apple, banana or pear will help to speed their ripening process. Ripe kiwifruits can be stored either at room temperature or in the refrigerator. For the most antioxidants, consume fully ripened kiwifruit.
Health benefits include:
- Promotes Healthy Weight Loss
Kiwis are a nutrient-dense food, meaning that they are high in nutrients and low in calories.
Because kiwi is relatively low in calories (about 42 calories each) and an excellent source of fiber, it’s also a great food if you’re looking to drop excess pounds. (2) You can eat a kiwi if you’re in the mood for something sweet but don’t want to load up on junk foods, like cookies, ice cream, or cake.
- Improves Respiratory Health
Kiwi contains a good amount of vitamin C, which is a powerful antioxidant and an immune booster. But vitamin C doesn’t only strengthen the immune system, it may also improve breathing and reduce symptoms of asthma.
One study found a link between eating four fresh golden kiwis per day and reduced respiratory tract infection symptoms.
- Protects against vision loss
Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss, and kiwis might help protect your eyes from it. One study found that by eating three servings of fruit a day, macular degeneration was decreased by 36 percent. Kiwis’ high levels of zeaxanthin and lutein are thought to contribute to this effect
- Prevents constipation
Numerous studies have reported that the kiwi may have a mild laxative effect and could be used as a dietary supplement, especially for individuals experiencing constipation. Regular consumption of kiwifruit was shown to promote bulkier, softer, and more frequent stool production.
- Lowering blood pressure
Due to their high potassium content, kiwifruit can help reduce high blood pressure. It is well known that a high sodium intake is a risk factor for high blood pressure; however, low potassium intake is also a risk factor.
